even the rain is coloured, part II
You might have noticed the name change.
photography, books, life always sounded a bit awkward to me. So I have renamed it even the rain is coloured which was the name of my old, now defunct Wordpress blog where I was planning on writing all about my move to New Orleans and to provide my suggestions for planning a long distance move in general, recommendations for people visiting New Orleans, restaurant reviews, must see places, tours, etc. Yes, well, best intentions and all that. La di da, la di da.
This weekend, after going through even more unposted photos from my time there, I realised that name is still relevant and unique and perfect for this blog. Just like my experiences in Louisiana, to which many people may be able to relate. Maybe with just a change of city or state or country. For the record, Louisiana seemed like another country at times.
For the first post under the new name, I am reposting a restaurant review from the old blog for Sylvain, still a favourite and still a scrumptious restaurant.
I am also lamenting the selling of a camera which I sorely miss. The perfect street photography tool for me. I get in these moods occasionally, and get rid of stuff: clothes, books, photo props, stuff. And cameras. Apparently.
I sold my Nikon 1 S-1 Mirrorless camera to help pay for a Fujifilm X100S which I also sold and do not miss one bit. Shortly after I packed the Nikon and sent it on its way north, I missed it. A lot.
Besides being perfect for street photography, I liked the selective colour feature as I could control the range of colours and intensity. I normally dislike photos using selective colour because they often look too extreme for my tastes and not very well done. As a friend wisely stated, “I think it’s like punctuation marks.” Yes! Exactly!
My kit included two lenses, UV lens filters, an extra battery, cleaning cloth, and case. Ah… me and my moods and my Aries impulsivity.
Two topics for this week, but one common thread… New Orleans. That old, uncomfortable, bittersweet love affair that will never go away. And that’s fine with me.
One of my new favourite restaurants is Sylvain. New to me, although they have only been open since autumn of 2010. I discovered this gem on my 2012 trip, and was pretty much blown away by the food. I also had a delightful waitperson, rather like a bubbly, young Goldie Hawn that gave me perfect recommendations.
Now... I have lost my notes on my first meal, so I will have to do this from memory. For starters, I do NOT remember the wine I had. For some reason a Chianti comes to mind, but I am not sure, and I do not remember brand or vintage. Sorry to all the wine snobs out there. I almost always drink red, no matter what I am eating, unless it is super hot. Apparently, May in New Orleans was not quite hot enough for this to occur.
To start, I had a shaved brussel sprout salad with apples, hazelnuts, reggiano parmesan, and a citrus vinaigrette. I had never eaten raw brussel sprouts and wow! I could have eaten two salads. For the main course, I had the fish special which was a grouper, sautéed (I think I am remembering this correctly) and served over pasta with vegetables (summer squash and cherry tomatoes) in a ham broth. Yep. Ham. Who knew? Totally orgasmic. For dessert, I chose the cheese plate which featured bleu, goat, and sheep cheese, all domestic, served with cranberry relish, spicy pecans, and crostini.
Everything was beyond superb. And there would be photos, but that night I decided to leave my camera at the hostel, and only had my mobile. And, to be honest, I just didn’t feel like taking pictures of the food. As unlike me as that may sound, it’s the truth.
I went again on my short visit in April this year (2013). Sylvain gets great reviews on their hamburgers, so I thought I’d try one. I started with a glass of Pinot Noir. (Again… I cannot remember brand or vintage.) But before that arrived, I ordered the yummy shaved brussel sprout salad. Just as good as the first time. As for the hamburger, it was exactly how you want your hamburgers to taste. Moist, delicious, cooked the way you asked, and served with handcut fries and spicy pickles. I should have stopped there, but I am a sucker for cheese and ordered the cheese plate for dessert again.
Luckily, New Orleans is a fabulous walking city and I walked off most of the cheese course. I hope.
I cannot recommend Sylvain enough. They are located at 625 Chartres in the French Quarter. And you probably should make reservations.
